Long-term care insurance is one of the most valuable — and most confusing — pieces of a senior living plan. Knowing what triggers your policy, how the elimination period works, and what documentation you'll need saves families weeks of frustration.
What usually triggers a policy
Inability to perform two or more of six standard activities of daily living (ADLs): bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring, continence, eating.
Cognitive impairment requiring substantial supervision — usually confirmed by a physician's certification.
Documentation of ongoing need through a plan of care.
Common mistakes families make
Filing before the elimination period is understood — days may need to be documented before benefits begin.
Missing the policy's requirement for care from a state-licensed provider.
Assuming any assisted living is covered — some older policies require nursing-facility care to trigger benefits.
